POET ABU NUWAS AND THE CALIPH HAROON AL RASHID: A STORY

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

لقد ضاع شعرى على بابكم

 كما ضاع عقدٌ على صدر خالصه

يحكى أن الخليفه هارون الرشيد كانت لديه جاريه تدعى خالصه وكانت فائقة الجمال والحسن وكان يحبها حباً شديدا ... واستدعى أبو نواس عنده في الديوان ليلقي عليه الشعر بحضور خالصه ، وعندما إنتهى أبو نواس من إلقاء الشعر لم يلتفت إليه الخليفه أو يستحسن شعره على الرغم من أن أبو نواس قال أحسن ما عنده للخليفه .. فإغتاظ أبو نواس أشد الغيظ وهو يعلم أن الخليفه مشغول بملاطفة خالصه والتغزل بها

وتجاهل شعره ... وبحضور أبو نواس أهدى الخليفه خالصه عقد ثمين مرصع بأغلى الجواهر .. ولم يكافىء أبو نواس نظير إلقاءه أروع الشعر في مدح الخليفه أو حتي يستحسن الشعر .. فإستأذن أبو نواس من الخليفه بالإنصراف وتوجه إلى باب غرفة خالصه وكتب عليه:- لقد ضاع شعرى على بابكم... كما ضاع عقدٌ على صدر خالصه.

وذهب أبو نواس إلي بيته ... وعندما رأت خالصه ما كتبه أبو نواس على باب غرفتها غضبت وذهبت تشتكى للخليفه .. فجن جنون الخليفه وأمر الحرس بإحضار أبو نواس ليعاقب على فعلته الشنيعه .. وعندما علم أبو نواس أن الخليفه غاضب علم بالأمر وسبب غضب الخليفه .. وذهب للخليفه مع الحرس ولكنه قبل أن يدخل على الخليفه مر على باب خالصه وقام بمسح تجويف العين من كلمة ضاع في الشطرين لتصبح ضاء

ويتغير المعني من ذم لمدح .. وعندما دخل على الخليفه سأله : لقد طلبتني أيها الخليفه لأمرٍ هام ..

فقال له الخليفه:- ما هذا الذي كتبته يا أبو نواس على باب خالصه ؟؟ فقال له أبو نواس بكل براءه ،، لم أكتب إلا كل خير يا سيدى فلقد مدحت ولم أرى سبباً لكل هذا الغضب .. دعنا نذهب جميعا ونرى ما كتبت بكل ثقه ... فقال له الخليفه والله يا أبو نواس لو كذبت لأقطعن رأسك .. ذهبوا جميعا .. وإذ بالخليفه يرى دهاء وذكاء وسرعة بديهته لتغيير معنى كلمة ضاع إلى ضاء ... وأصبح البيت يقرأ هكذا:-

لقد ضاء شعرى على بابكم.... كما ضاء عقدٌ على صدر خالصه فضحك الخليفه وقال لأبو نواس والله يا خبيث لقد قمت بمسح تجويف حرف العين وغيرت المعنى ...

وهو معجبٌ أشد الإعجاب بذكاء أبو نواس وأمر الحاجب بأن يكافىء أبو نواس بحفنه من الدنانير وانصرف ..

It is narrated that the Caliph Haroon Rashid had a maid servant named Khalisa. She was extremely beautiful and the Caliph loved her very much. The poet Abu Nuwas was summoned in the Caliph’s parlor to present some of his poetry in the presence of Khalisa. When Abu Nuwas had finished reciting his poetry, the Caliph did not pay any attention to him nor did he express any appreciation for the poetry despite the fact that the poet had recited the very best of his poetry for the Caliph.

Abu Nuwas was quite angry and he knew that the Caliph was occupied with Khalisa talking to her and ignored his poetry. The Caliph presented to Khalisa an expensive necklace studded with precious jewels while Abu Nuwas went without any equivalent reward for his grand poetry in praise of the Caliph. No, he did not even get a cursory appreciation. Abu Nuwas requested permission to leave and while going he wrote the following lines of poetry on the door of Khalisa’s room.

No doubt my verses are wasted on your door

Just as the necklace is a waste on Khalisa’s chest

Abu Nuwas thus left for his home. When Khalisa saw what was written over the door of her room, she was simply mad and went before the Caliph to complain.

The Caliph got enraged and ordered his police to bring Abu Nuwas to him to punish him for his abominable act. Abu Nuwas came to know of the reason for the Caliph’s anger. As he went with the police he stopped by Khalisa’s door and wiped away the letter ع from the two lines of his poetry so that it became ض, before entering in the Caliph’s presence.

This simple alteration changed the meaning from reproach to admiration. As he came before the Caliph Abu Nuwas asked him that perhaps he had been called for some important matter.

The Caliph asked Abu Nuwas what he had written over Khalisa’s door. Abu Nuwas answered:

“My chief I did not write anything but what was good. I simply praised her and I cannot understand the reason for your anger. Why don’t we all go and see what I wrote with certainty?”

The Caliph said, “Abu Nuwas if you are lying then I will have her head cut off.”

They all went together and when the Caliph perceived Abu Nuwas’s intelligence, improvisation and the speediness with which he had changed the letters, he broke out laughing.

The couplet had changed to:

لقد ضاء شعرى على بابكم
 كما ضاء عقدٌ على صدر خالصه

My verse is shining over your door

Just like the necklace is resplendent over Khalisa’s chest

He told Abu Nuwas, “By Allah, you are a little devil! You were quick enough to wipe away the ع that changed the meaning.”

He was all over with wonder at Abu Nuwas’s astuteness and ordered that Abu Nuwas be given a handful of dinars, and then left.
