CHAPTER 5

5- قوة الحيوان وضعف الانسان

وكان في ذلك كله ينظر إلى جميع الحيوانات، فيراها كاسية بالأوبار (مكسوّة بالأصواف)، والأشعار وأنواع الريش على اختلاف ألوانها، وتباين أجناسها وتنوع أشكالها.

وكان يرى ما لها من سرعة العدو (الجري)، وقوة البطش والفتك، وما لها من الأسلحة المعدة لمدافعة من ينازعها، مثل الأنياب والحوافر والصياصي (قرون الظباء)، والمخالب (أظفار الحيوان والطير).

ثم يرجع إلى نفسه، فيرى ما به من العرى، وعدم السلاح، وضعف العدو، وقلة البطش، عندما كانت تنازعه الوحوش أكل الثمرات، وتستبد به (تستأثر) بها دونه، وتتغلب عليه، فلا يستطيع المدافعة عن نفسه، ولا الفرار بشيء من الثمار!

وكان يرى أترابه (من ولد معه)- يعني أشباهه في السن- من أولاد الظباء، قد نبتت لها قرون بعد أن لم تكن؛ وصارت قوية بعد ضعفها في العدو. ولا يرى لنفسه شيئاً من هذا كله.

فكان يفكر في ذلك، ولا يدري ما سببه؟

وكان أيضاً ينظر إلى سائر الحيوان، فيراها مستورة بالأذناب، فكسوة بالأوبار- أو ما شابهها- فكان ذلك كله يكربه (يسوءه ويحزنه).

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The strength of animals and the weakness of the human beings

And during these circumstances, Ibn Yaqdhan would think about the other animals. He saw some of them covered with wool, hair and feathers of different color, types and shapes.

He would notice the speed with which the other animals would run and their strength and ability to kill. He would see their ready-made weapons for defense against anyone who attacked them, like the teeth, hoofs, horns and claws.

He would then look at himself and saw himself naked and without any natural weapons. He noticed his own weakness in running and lack of strength. When the beasts fought with him in eating fruits, they would overwhelm him while he would not be able to defend himself or run away with any fruit.

He saw that the young ones of the deer who were of the same age as him developed horns while he did not. They became faster in running while he remained weak. He did not find in himself anything of what the animals possessed. He would think and wonder what was the cause of it? Whatever animal he saw, he saw it having a tail and covered with wool or something similar to it. All of this caused him grief and discomfort.
