Preface

1- جواري الوقواق
أيها القارئ الصغير:

هل عرفت جزائر الوقواق؟ ما أظنك رأيتها، ولكني أحسبك قد سمعت بها، وقرأت عنها في القصص والأساطير، أعني، الأحاديث القديمة الخيالية العجيبة. ولقد حاولت أن أتعرف هذه الجزائر- كما حاول غيري من الباحثين أن يهتدوا إلى مكانها- فلم اوفق، ولم يوفّقوا إلى شيء من ذلك. ولا سبيل إلى رؤية هذه الجزائر، لأنها- في الحق- جزائر خيالية، لا وجود لها في عالم الوجود، وليس لها مكان في هذه الدنيا التي نعيش فيها، وإن كان لها أرحب مكان في عالم الاساطيرن ودنيا الخيال!

ولقد زعم بعض اسلافنا الأقدمين: أن جزائر الوقواق واقعة تحت خط الاستواء، وان فيها جزيرة يولد بها الإنسان من غير ام ولا أب!

وزعم بعضهم فقال بغير تحقيق: "إن إحدى جزائر الوقواق تنبت شجراً عجيباً، لا يثمر الفواكه وما إليها من ضروب الثمر، كما تثمر الأشجار الأخر، بل يثمر النساء وحدهن".

وقد أطلقوا على هؤلاء النسوة- اللائي يولدن من تلك الأشجار- اسم: جواري الوقواق.

وقد زعموا ان جزيرة أخرى من هذه الجزائر تنبت أشجارها الرجال دون النساء!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The maids of the island Al Waqaq

O little reader! Do you know anything about the island of Al Waqaq? I do not think that you have seen it but I think that you must have heard about it and read about it in the stories and legends by which I mean the old, imaginary and wonderful tales. I have tried to discover this island as other explorers besides me have tried to find their way to it. But I did not succeed and nor did they towards any part of it. This is because this in reality is a fictional island. It does not exist in this world and it does not occupy any place in the world that we live in even though it has a prominent place in the realm of the legends and the world of imagination.

Some of our earliest ancestors thought that the islands of Al Waqaq lay below the Equator. They also thought that in one of these islands human beings were born without mother and father. Some of them thought without any verification that strange trees grew in that island. Those trees did not bear any fruit and their product was unlike any other species of fruits that other trees produced. They produced only women. They called these women who were produced from these trees the maids of Al Waqaq. They also thought that there was another island whose trees produced only men.
