الفصل الأول 1- مولد ابن يقظان

كان من بين جزائر الهند جزيرة عظيمة، متسعة الاكناف (فسيحة الجوانب)، بعيدة الأرجاء (النواحي)، كثيرة الفوائد، عامرة بالناس؛ يملكها رجل منهم، شديد الأنفة (الترفع والغيرة). وكانت له أخت ذات جمال نادر، وحسن باهر. وكان أخوها متكبراً مزهواً (فخوراً معجباً بنفسه)، فلم يشأ أن يزوجها بأحد من الرجال لأنها فيما يرى لا يجد كفئاً لمصاهرته، أعني لمن يصبح له صهراً (زوجاً لأخته).

وكان لهذه الفتاة قريب اسمه يقظان وهو كريم النفس، طيب الخلال (الأخلاق). فلما غاب الملك في بعض حروبه، وطالت غيبته، حسبه أهله قد مات، أو قتل في تلك الحروب، فزوّجوا يقظان تلك الفتاة سراً. وبعد أشهر قليلة، حملت منه، ثم وضعت طفلاً تلوح عليه مخايل الذكاء (أماراته)، ودلائل النبل. وما وضعت الفتاة طفلها، حتى عاد أخوها من حروبه منتصراً. ولم يجرؤ أحد من أقارب الملك على الإفضاء إليه (إعلامه وإخباره) بسر الزواج الذي تم في غيبته، خوفاً من غضبه عليهم وانتقامه منهم.

وخشيت الفتاة أن يذيع سرها، فيقتلها أخوها. ولم تر بداً (لم تجد سعة ولا مفراً) من كتمان أمرها عنه.

وبعد افتكار طويل، قرّ قرارها على التخلص من الورطة: بإقصاء الطفل التاعس (الساقط الحظ) المسكين عن الجزيرة، حتى لا تسوء العقبى (النتيجة والخاتمة).

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

THE BIRTH OF THE SON OF YAQDاAN

Among the islands of India, there was a great island with wide borders and far away districts. There were many benefits to be found in it and it was well populated. It was ruled by a man of great pride. He had a sister of exceptional grace and dazzling beauty. Her brother was arrogant and self-conceited who would not marry her to any man since he did not find anyone of equal status for this relationship. This girl had a relative whose name was Yaqdhan. He possessed a pleasing nature and a good character.

When the king did not return for a long time from one of his wars, the people of the island married this girl with Yaqdhan secretly. After a few months, she became pregnant and then gave birth to a child who demonstrated obvious signs of intelligence and nobility.

She had hardly given birth to this child when her brother returned victoriously from his wars. The relatives of the king did not dare disclose the secret marriage of his sister to him fearing his wrath and revenge. The girl feared that her secret might be disclosed and then her brother would kill her. She did not find any way out except to conceal her affair. After long deliberation she settled on a solution to this difficult situation. She decided to send this unfortunate and poor child far away from the island to prevent anything bad from happening to him.
